Honors Minors

Students admitted to the Honors Minor in Leadership will complete five courses/leadership learning experiences (15 credits): (1) SPEA-L 377, Foundations of Leadership (Core Requirement); (2) Leadership Communication; (3) Conceptual Leadership; (4) Community Leadership; and, (5) Applied Leadership Skills. Students will select classes or leadership learning experiences from three or four leadership skills categories. Due to the interdisciplinary intent of this program, no more than two courses (6.0 credit hours) can be in the same subject prefix.

Foundations of Leadership (3 cr.)
This is a core requirement. Students will begin their ePortfolio in this course and add leadership experiences through their final semester HON-H 398 course.

Interdisciplinary Learning Outcomes: thinks critically; and, analyzes, synthesizes, and evaluates

Leadership Communication Skills (3-6 cr.)
Interdisciplinary Learning Outcomes: evaluates information; listens actively; builds relationships; and conveys ideas effectively

Conceptual Leadership Skills (3-6 cr.)
Interdisciplinary Learning Outcomes: thinks critically; and analyzes, synthesizes, and evaluates

Community Leadership Skills (3-6 cr.)
Interdisciplinary Learning Outcomes: builds community; respectfully engages own and other cultures; behaves ethically; and anticipates consequences

Applied Leadership Skills (0-6 cr.)
Interdisciplinary Learning Outcomes: thinks critically; and analyzes, synthesizes, and evaluates

Students may pursue this minor if they:

• Are enrolled in the IU Indianapolis Honors College or possess a cumulative IU Indianapolis GPA of at least 3.5

Students must:

• Declare intent to pursue the Honors Minor in Leadership at least 3-4 semesters prior to graduation to ensure this credential is properly recorded on their official transcripts
• Maintain a 3.5 overall GPA (each credit-bearing course requires a B or higher grade)
• Must enroll in the Honors Portfolio course in their senior year

Because this is an honors minor, students are expected to take the honors section of available courses or complete an honors contract for other sections.

Environmental Health Sciences
A study of human interaction with the environment and potential impacts of environmental agents on health and safety. Hazards from natural sources and human activities that contaminate our air, land, water, food, homes, neighborhoods, and workplaces are examined. Environmental control activities, including pollution control technology and policy, are also examined.

Introduction to Biostatistics
This is an introductory survey of statistical reasoning and analysis. Additionally, students should have a working knowledge of personal computers and the Windows operating environment.

Principles of Epidemiology
A basic overview of epidemiologic methodology and techniques. Both communicable and chronic disease risk factors will be discussed, along with data acquisition, analysis techniques, and current published epidemiological studies.

Health Systems Administration
An overview of the U.S. health care delivery system. It examines the organization, function, and role of the system; current system problems; and alternative systems or solutions.

Community Health
This course provides learning opportunities for public health undergraduate students to develop an understanding of factors that distinguish personal health, individual actions that affect the health of an individual and those close to him or her—from community health, which refers to the health status of a defined group of people and the actions, policies, structures, and conditions that promote, protect, and preserve the health of communities.

Students may pursue this minor if they:

• Are enrolled full time at IU Indianapolis
• Are enrolled in the IU Indianapolis Honors College or possess a cumulative IU Indianapolis GPA of at least 3.5
• Are enrolled in a major outside of the School of Public Health
• Have the ability to complete the minor along with other school and program requirements

Because this minor is administered by the School of Public Health, students must declare their intention to pursue the minor by completing the school's application, available online or at the School of Public Health Student Services Office, 1050 Wishard Blvd., HS 6008. This application should be completed at the same time the student completes an application for graduation with the baccalaureate degree.

You must pursue the honors version of the minor, or complete an Honors contract for each non-Honors course and submit it to the IU Indianapolis Honors College for approval.

Students may pursue this minor if they:

• Completion of properly distributed credit hour requirements for the baccalaureate degree in effect when the student was admitted to their home school

• Completion of 15 credit hours, with a minimum grade of C in each course

• Contact the program or your advisor to complete the necessary paperwork to officially declare the minor

• Complete a minor declaration form in the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Student Services Office, University Hall, Suite 3000, 301 University Blvd.

Because this is an honors minor, students are expected to take the Honors section of available courses or complete an honors contract for other sections. Students are expected to maintain a B average (3.0) in all courses, as well as maintain a B average overall.
