As soon as Kathryn saw IUPUI (now IU Indianapolis), she fell in love with both the atmosphere and the people. The opportunities for research and internships due to the the location being around so many hospitals were also bonuses for Kathryn. As a Bepko Scholar, she hopes to pioneer service activities that will make a lasting impact on the community of Indianapolis, focusing on food-based services, such as food pantries. She hopes to help with a community garden to provide people in need with fresh fruits and vegetables at her church's food pantry. At the food pantry, she carries bags of food to people's cars, sorts food, and packs it to be distributed. She has also participated in bell ringing through her National Honor Society at her local grocery store every winter to raise money for Salvation Army. In her family, she is the third oldest child of seven, which has taught her to be a leader and role model to her younger siblings. In addition to serving in her church, she has been president of her 4-H group for four years. She also participated in Special Olympiad for six years, and it has inspired her to study epidemiology. She hopes to eventually work in a research lab and publish research. In her future, she plans to combat disease epidemics, as well as social epidemics, such as food insecurity.
