Bethany chose IUPUI (now IU Indianapolis) because of its wide variety of research, community service, and leadership opportunities. To Bethany, being a Bepko Scholar means giving everything she can to serve the community around her and recognizing the importance of education. She is passionate about dual immersion education and believes that every student should have the opportunity to develop and learn their native language while doing the same with a second language. Bethany wants to go into the medical field, and she wants to be multilingual so that she can communicate to English- and non-English-speaking patients. In high school, she volunteered in dual language immersion classrooms, put together booklets, and communicated with students in English. In addition, she co-founded a “Bring Change to Mind Club” at her high school where they installed mental health bulletin boards and raised awareness about resources in her school. In her personal life, her grandmother is one of her most influential people. Her grandmother survived polio and lives with multiple health conditions, but she still continues to always find something to be excited about. After graduation, her career goal is to become a nephrologist or cardiologist. She wants to help kids with chronic health conditions as her doctors have helped her. Bethany hopes to become involved in research for more efficient early testing methods, minimally invasive surgical procedures, or develop more efficient treatment and medical devices.
