INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., September 7, 2022—MaKayla looks forward to her opportunities in research at IUPUI. To her, being a Bepko Scholar means representing the university through volunteerism and leadership. MaKayla plans to advocate for youth healthcare access as a Bepko Scholar. In high school, she was a Riley Dance Marathon president, and was able to advocate for healthcare access through fundraising. She was chosen as a Riley Children’s Foundation Next Generation Philanthropist for her work as president of Riley Dance Marathon. MaKayla has raised over $4000 for the Caroline Symmes Children’s Cancer Endowment and was awarded “Most Innovative Fundraiser”. She hopes to use her experience with leadership and fundraising to increase access to healthcare for children and adolescents in the area. MaKayla will be in the accelerated epidemiology/MPH program and plans to pursue medical school as well.
