INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., January 31, 2022—Isra is fond of her days as a Bepko Scholar. She describes her undergraduate experience at IUPUI as rewarding and meaningful. “IUPUI provided me with opportunities not just to excel as a student and scholar but also to stay engaged in my community,” Haider says. As a Bepko Scholar, Isra served her community by being a founding officer of the on-campus organization, Women4Change, which seeks to mobilize students to become politically involved. She was also the Campus Election Engagement Program Fellow for the IUPUI Office of Community Engagement in 2020, where she organized voter registration and education programs. Isra was chosen as an IUPUI Chancellor's Scholar in 2021 and was selected as one of the Top 10 students at IUPUI in the Top 100 competition. Dr. Kathy Marrs, the interim executive associate dean of the Honors College and IUPUI biology professor, was her mentor throughout undergrad. She says that Dr. Marrs motivated her with her passion for her students and of moving toward a more equal and just society. Isra graduated with a double major in biology and sociology in May 2021 and is currently in the prestigious J.D. program at the IU McKinney School of Law. She hopes to pursue a career in law that focuses on health policy and the social determinants of health.
